The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA Ensemble

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA is a full-scholarship masters program that accepts one ensemble every two years. In the current class, eight extraordinary young jazz musicians were selected for the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA, Class of 2023 through a rigorous application process, culminating in an audition judged by Institute Chairman and legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock; renowned musician, producer and philanthropist Herb Alpert; and trumpeter, Blue Note recording artist and Institute of Jazz Performance alumnus Ambrose Akinmusire. Each will attain a Master of Music in Jazz Performance degree from The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, one of the nation’s top music schools, after completing this intensive, two-year program in spring 2023. The ensemble studies with legendary jazz artists and travels the world performing and teaching the next generation of jazz musicians.

Justin Asher

Justin Asher is a Los Angeles based composer, sound designer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He’s currently designing sound for the Webby and Image winning podcast Levar Burton Reads and was the audio producer for the Emmy nominated documentary Con Safos, as well as composer for the silent feature film What?. As a tech-centric creator across most sound producing media he's currently focusing on immersive 3D audio and web-based narrative, music and documentary.

Jonathan Thomas Miller

Composer Jonathan Thomas Miller writes music for TV and film that often has an experimental nature. Over the last 20 years, he has composed over 7000 pieces of music. Trained by many luminaries of modern classical music (M.F.A. CalArts), combined with the love of recording dating back to his teenage years, Jonathan has shaped the sound of TV scores with his often oblique and idiosyncratic take on music.

William Roper

William Roper is a multi-disciplinary artist residing in Los Angeles. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, , Cal State Northridge, L.A. City College and Carnegie-Mellon University. He has toured Europe, the Americas and Japan as a soloist and with ensembles. He has released 14 recordings as leader/co-leader and is sideman on 60+ recordings. He has founded several ensembles, most significantly Purple Gums. He founded Tomato Sage Consortium, a presenting organization, existing today as a small record label.

Sarah Belle Reid

Sarah Belle Reid is a performer-composer who plays trumpet, modular synthesizer, and an ever-growing collection of handcrafted electronic instruments. Her unique musical voice explores the intersections between contemporary classical music, experimental and interactive electronics, visual arts, noise music, and improvisation.

ROCO CORDOVA

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Roco Córdova is a vocalist, composer, producer and improviser based in the San Francisco Bay Area. They possess a B.Mus. in Composition from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and an M.A. in Composition from Mills College in Oakland, California. They have studied under the guidance of Carlos Carrillo, Manuel Ceide, Roscoe Mitchell, Zeena Parkins and James Fei. As a singer they have trained under the instruction of conductor and countertenor Paul Flight and have participated in vocal advancement workshops with Meredith Monk.
