2-Year Program

The MFA Program in Music is designed to enable students to acquire the multiple skillsets that will empower them to stake out their own, unique, career pathways to success. The program of study is designed to be a stimulating and challenging, collaborative learning environment, in which music and sound artists can refine and perfect their already distinctive voices to reach the highest levels of professional practice, while simultaneously exploring new and inspiring, creative territories.

About the Specialization

MFA VoiceArts studies enables accomplished voice artists to develop advanced performance techniques and a greater range of stylistic directions as they build their individual artistic profiles, enhance their creative versatility, and prepare for professional careers after graduation.

In addition to major lessons, graduate vocal coaching, and advanced classes in music history, literature, theory and analysis, MFA candidates focus on experimental courses and directions, and on vocal physiology and pedagogical topics, with all areas supplemented with independent study, as desired. While most MFA candidates focus on performance projects of their own creation, they may perform in a variety of ensemble and solo situations as well. Studies in performance theory and practicums outside of music enhance student projects, as do movement studies chosen from a wide array of options. All study and projects are designed in close consultation with the student’s mentor and the VoiceArts faculty. All MFA candidates graduate with a fully developed website and professional portfolio of their work, along with intensive career development assistance.

All MFA voice artists are required to pass a Mid-Residence Project/Recital and a Graduation Jury, Graduation Project/Recital, and a Graduation Portfolio in order to obtain the degree.
