A CalArts alum (School of Theater), Martin is a Los Angeles- based sound and video designer whose work spans theatre, opera, immersive installations, rock concerts and everything in between. Career highlights include the operas Crescent City and Invisible Cities with The Industry, Deaf West’s American Buffalo, The Speakeasy Society’s The Johnny Cycle and video design for Neil Frances at the 2018’s Life is Beautiful festival. The pop concert is a performance genre in and of itself… A genre that borrows greatly from music and theatre, but has rules separate from both of those genres. At the zenith, performing artists collaborate with scores of design artists to create modern Gesamtkunstwerks that leave indelible impressions on attendees. In this discussion we will look at some hallmarks of the evolution of the genre from David Byrne to U2, St. Vincent, and Christine and the Queens.
