Recital: Sarah Fouhy is a composer from Auckland, New Zealand. She began her career as a composer while she was still residing in Auckland, where she received a commission from Auckland Choral after placing first in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s National High School Composition Competition in 2016. This recital will feature new works that Sarah composed during her time at CalArts, including the World Premiere of The Tides of Remembrance (2019–2021) for SATB choir, chamber orchestra, piano and percussion. The Tides of Remembrance reflects upon the tragedy of the terrorist attacks that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15, 2019. The piece focuses on the loss and tragedy within a community but also emphasizes the importance of optimism and unity of a society in light of tragedy. Sarah communicates the importance of this within her piece by using texts from The Requiem Mass, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s speeches in order to symbolize community within her work. This is a central theme within her repertoire as a composer, where she explores external forces that affect society and the human psyche. Please join us to celebrate Sarah’s Graduation Recital!
