B321 - Writing for Harp

School of Music Visiting Artist

Sean will discuss the use of the harp in his chamber music, film scores and in theater with analysis and recordings. He will share his scores and also talk about the instrument in relationship to improvisation.

For decades, Sean Griffin has been a pivotal figure in contemporary music, new opera, performance and art communities of Los Angeles and abroad. Griffin has composed, directed, conducted and produced new intermedia works bringing to life dazzling, challenging interpretations to the stage and the gallery with his opera design and performance consortium called Opera Povera. Their productions, recordings, live performances, and designs have been featured at MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, RedCat, LACMA, Schindler House, 56th Venice Biennial, Chicago’s MCA, Ostrava Days Festival, 2017 Ojai Festival, The Broad Museum, LA Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella Series at the Disney Hall, MaerzMusik - Berliner Festspiele, and Performance Space New York.

Griffin received an MFA in Composition from CalArts studying with Mel Powell and a PhD from UCSD with George Lewis and Chaya Czernowin. He has taught at UCSD, CalArts, University of Chicago and recently taught digital and sound art the University of Guanajuato, Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, Mexico.
