  African-American Improvisational Music

  MFA Course

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this graduate-level Performer/Composer pathway studies the performance practices, history, literature and philosophy of African-American improvisational music from a variety of perspectives.

In particular, students compare innovation in improvised music with both traditional and experimental practices in dance, theater, literature and film. Students are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary projects alongside their coursework requirements, which include intensive instrumental lessons, jazz and 20th-century composition and analysis, advanced systemic improvisation and African-American music literature. This program also features visiting artists from many disciplines.

Students are required to complete a written thesis in addition to presenting a mid-residence recital, a graduation recital and a final composition portfolio.
