KOBLA LADZEKPO

Kobla Ladzekpo is Co-Director of African Music and Dance at the California Institute of the Arts and the Director of the Music and Dance of Ghana Ensemble at UCLA. He comes from a family of composers, drummers and dancers who have served for many generations as lead drummers and composers among the Anlo Ewe people of Southeastern Ghana.

In recent years, he and other members of the Ladzekpo family have become celebrated as teachers and international performers of their music and are much in demand as lecturers and performers in Ghana and the United States. Ladzekpo has concertized in the former Soviet Union, Israel, Australia and Africa, as well as the United States and Africa as a member of dance companies and cultural groups.

Since 1982 he has been a frequent lecturer at various universities in Australia and at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Other pursuits include his own recording label, Zandonu Records and Zandonu African Music and Dance Company. A graduate of CalArts, he received an M.A. in anthropology at California State University, Northridge.

He received an award from Entertainment Critic and Review Association of Ghana honoring his devoted service in promoting Ghanaian music in the United States and in other parts of the world. He is also an honoree of the California Ethnic Dance Festival. Kobla has also participated in the production of the critically acclaimed film soundtrack Mississippi Masala.
