Position Announcement

NORTH INDIAN MUSIC AND RELATED STUDIES

The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts seeks an artist/teacher for a full-time position to teach North Indian music and related studies in a program that emphasizes mastery of traditional styles alongside contemporary explorations, includes supplemental courses in theory and skills and also offers classes and ensembles for Western performers and composers. The North Indian Music Program is incorporated within a larger arena of world music programs including BFA studies in World Music Performance and MFA studies in West African music and dance, Indonesian (Javanese and Balinese) music and dance, North Indian Music and World Percussion. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of Indian music performance and theory for both undergraduates and graduates and other areas related to integrating knowledge of world music into the School of Music general curriculum. A performer of a melodic instrument (i.e. sarode, sitar, etc.) is preferred. Knowledge of classical styles and an international reputation as an accomplished artist is essential, along with interests in exploring contemporary directions in a global musical context and a commitment to program building. Performing on concerts sponsored by the School is also included in the responsibilities of the position.

CalArts is an independent college with a strong commitment to the contemporary arts. Schools of Music, Visual Art, Theater, Dance, Film/Video and Critical Studies interact in a lively, interdisciplinary atmosphere. The School of Music offers studies in performer-composer, composition and experimental sound practices, jazz, performance (Western instrumental and voice, African, North Indian, Indonesian and other world music areas), music technology and musical arts and is committed to developing curriculum integration among these various programs. Minimum qualifications: significant and widely recognized professional record of innovative creative work and substantial college level teaching experience. Applications should include: 1) letter describing professional background, artistic and educational philosophies and a detailed vita, 2) three letters of recommendation and 3) list of courses or subject areas previously taught or within the candidate’s ability to teach, and any related administrative experience. Do not send work samples at this time. Audition/Interview: search committee will evaluate applications and may request work samples from selected candidates. A short list of finalists may be invited to CalArts for interviews with the committee and administration and to give presentations about their work for the CalArts community. Application screening will begin in mid–January 2009 and the position will remain open until filled. The anticipated start date for the position is September 2009.
