CalArts' Annual Jazz Album Recording at Capitol Records
CalArts' Annual Jazz Album Recording at Capitol Records

Founded by the late jazz giant Charlie Haden as a creative alternative to academic jazz studies, CalArts Jazz studies emphasizes small ensemble performance and improvisation, training students to become highly versatile performers, improvisers and composers.

At the undergraduate level, Jazz students begin to shape their musical identity, while at the MFA level students hone their practice—both tracks supported by private sessions, classes, ensembles and performance.

Jazz students work closely with their mentors within an apprenticeship model as students and faculty rehearse and perform together on a regular basis. Faculty challenge all Jazz students to perform, record, and produce as often as possible, rather than limit themselves to the School’s regular calendar of concerts and recitals. In addition, Jazz students each year have the opportunity—based on a juried competition—to record original work at legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood with the some of the best recording engineers in the world.

These recordings are available to stream or download in their entirety, without charge, from the CalArts Jazz CD Archive page linked below. The page also features photo galleries and links to each of the hundreds of talented musicians and graphic designers that have participated in the project over the years.
