Jazz Music & the Harlem Renaissance

Synopsis

Jazz Music and the Harlem Renaissance beginning in 1919 at the end of World War I to 1935, when Duke Ellington composed "Reminiscing In Tempo".

We'll focus on Jazz Music with a critical, creative and historical analysis of the musical innovations of Fletcher Henderson, James Reese Europe, Jelly Roll Morton, Joseph 'King' Oliver, Gertrude 'Ma' Rainey, Louis Armstrong, Lil Harding and Duke Ellington.

Also of great importance to our study, an overview of the creative and social literature, thus a survey of the writings of W. E. B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Nella Larsen, Jean Tooner and Claude McKay.

In order to develop an in depth perspective on the composers and writers of the Harlem Renaissance, allotting two sessions for each artist-group. To accomplish our goal we will use audio (CD's, Cassettes and Records) and video documentation as a study aid in our inquiry into the nature of Jazz Music during the Harlem Renaissance.
